The wider and more open banks make it easier to navigate than some of the other rivers in the Tsimane program, with gravel and rocky beds making it easy to walk. The terrain becomes steeper and more technically demanding as it flows upstream. The river is home to four of the region’s main target fish species: dorado, pacú, yatorana, and surubí. The upper section lies above the confluence of the Pluma and Itirizama rivers and resembles a classic mountain trout river with a gravel bed, boulders, rapids, and deep pools in exceptionally clear water. Fishing is almost exclusively on foot, going upstream. A traditional canoe is used to transport equipment and return to camp at the end of the day. This section is home to many dorado that hang out in the pools. The lower section extends from the confluence with the Itirizama River to the mouth of the Sécure River. The water volume here is 50-60% higher, meaning wider and deeper pools and stronger currents. The fish have more room to fight, so spectacular dorado jumps are common. The area offers a diverse water type: steep passages, long rapids, sandbars, island inlets and deep pools.

Dorado is the undisputed king of this section, but the deep pools also hold large pacú, which feed on fruits and nuts that fall into the water. Near the confluence with the Sécure, dorado can be fished in the shallows, similar to bonefishing.

The Itirizama River is considered the “crown jewel” of the Tsimane waters. It is similar in size to the upper Pluma River, but with a greater drop and more rugged terrain. It flows through narrow canyons with rapids, waterfalls, boulders and deep pools surrounded by rock walls. This is the most physically demanding section to hike and fish, but it rewards with outstanding natural beauty and some of the largest dorado in the region.
