Dhala & Samaki Camp

Mnyera and Ruhudji are considered a premier global destination for trophy tigerfish fishing.

Since the first exploratory expeditions began in 2008, the Mnyera and Ruhudji rivers in southwestern Tanzania have become world-renowned fishing destinations, primarily due to their large tigerfish, which can weigh between 10 and 25 pounds (approximately 4.5–11 kg).

Most fishing takes place from boats, focusing on river structures such as submerged trees, long sandbanks, steep drop-offs, and rocky outcrops. Sand anchors or mid-river moorings are used as needed to position the boat over the target fishing area. Tigerfish ranging from 1 to 12 kg are the primary target in these waters.

This river system has experienced very little fishing pressure over the centuries. The combination of low fishing pressure and an exceptionally abundant population of prey fish (especially red-finned barbel) has allowed the tigerfish to reach impressive sizes; trophy specimens in this system weigh over 7 kilograms.

Fishing is conducted primarily from boats. Guides use 6-meter "Go-Devil" boats powered by 25 HP engines, navigating through submerged timber, steep banks, sandbars, and rocky areas. One day of the week is dedicated to fishing the rapids from the shore—often considered the highlight of the trip. Each boat accommodates two anglers, a guide, and a boatman. All boats are equipped with a first aid kit.

Dhala Camp on the Mnyera River and Samaki Camp on the Ruhudji River combine an authentic safari experience with the comforts of a classic lodge. Staying in comfortable en-suite tents allows for direct contact with the wilderness, where guests are accompanied by the sounds of the African bush and the activity along the river.

Samaki Camp offers three traditional safari tents with either twin or double beds. The communal area is situated in the shade of the riverine forest, and meals are often served outdoors on the sandy riverbank. A chef prepares the food, using fresh ingredients, fruit, and meat.

Dhala Camp consists of four tents set on raised wooden platforms, each featuring a private deck overlooking the river. The main camp area includes a dining room, a covered lounge, a library, and a fly-tying corner. Electrical outlets are also available for guests to charge their electronic devices.
